If any member, while in the performance of his duty, or by reason of service, shall
become physically or mentally disabled, and such disability shall be deemed to be
of a temporary nature by the board, the member shall be eligible to receive temporary
disability pay in an amount equal to the monthly compensation paid such member as
salary at the date of such disability plus any increase in salary granted during the
period of disability, not to exceed a period of one year.
